“I’m really motivated by creating positive change, I think it’s something that everybody should aim to do – but as designers we definitely hold a unique responsibility and ability to make this change happen.”

Liberty Mitchell – Junior Design Manager

We are thrilled to introduce our newest team member, Liberty Mitchell, who has moved from The Northeast to The Big Smoke and joins us as a Junior Designer.

What motivates you ?

I’m really motivated by creating positive change, I think it’s something that everybody should aim to do – but as designers we definitely hold a unique responsibility and ability to make this change happen.

In a more specific sense, my motivation is to design spaces that have a positive impact on the people that inhabit them. The average person spends a third of their life at work, making the design of workspaces particularly crucial. When tasked with designing an office space, I have the opportunity to create a space that is not only functional but also that people can enjoy spending time in, and that is my motivation and end goal.

Describe yourself in 3 words

  •  Determined
  •  Positive
  •  Open minded

What do you most hope to bring to Virtus?

I would really love to be able to contribute a unique, design-led approach to Virtus’ projects. My goal is to employ a creative and strategic design approach, resulting in projects that don’t only meet functional requirements, but also stand out for their aesthetic appeal and user experience.

I am also super excited about the opportunity to start building up a materials library for the team to utilize and reference, taking into account elements such as suitability, cost and sustainability as well as aesthetic appearance.

What did you study?

I studied Interior Architecture at Northumbria University in Newcastle.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years, I see myself having vastly expanded and varied my experience and knowledge, through the opportunities that being a part of the Virtus team allows. I hope to have a variety of different projects under my belt that I am proud of, but I’d still really like to be working on things that push and challenge me as a designer.

I also really hope to have built up a multitude of professional connections within all different areas of the industry that I can utilize in my work at Virtus. I strongly believe that collaboration and the merging of varying ideas and viewpoints is key to a successful design and end product.

Any interesting past jobs?

During secondary school, for pocket money, I used to walk Donkeys on the beach for children to ride. It definitely gave me some transferable skills, such as effective communication and multi-tasking, however I don’t think it’s one I’ll be putting at the top of my CV anytime soon.

Hobbies?

I absolutely love to bake! I make a mean brownie, and an even better cheesecake. I’ve considered setting up a small bakes business in the past, and it’s definitely something I can see myself doing at some point!

What are you currently binge watching?

Gilmour girls.

What’s your go to coffee order?

Iced Caramel Latte in summer, Cinnamon latte (with cream) in winter.

Any guilty pleasures that you are happy to share?

Harry Potter and a hot chocolate (all year round)

Tell us something about you that not many people know?

I did Tang Soo Do (a type of Karate) for a couple of years when I was younger. I got up to a red belt and I can still count to ten in Korean.
