“The standout feature of the project had to be the bespoke feature wall running along the main corridor.”
Virtus Contracts partnered with BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, to deliver a CAT B office fit-out and event space within a live occupied building in London. The project transformed the space into a highly flexible workplace that supports both day-to-day operations and large-scale events.
From the outset, the design focused on adaptability. Consequently, the workspace can operate as a large open-plan event venue or as a series of cellular meeting rooms for workshops, training sessions, and collaborative activities. This flexibility allows BCS to maximise the use of the space while accommodating a wide range of events and working styles.
Delivering Within a Challenging Programme
Working to a demanding programme, our team delivered a high-quality workplace that balances functionality, technology, and design. Furthermore, we completed the project on time and within budget.
The occupied city-centre location presented several logistical challenges. However, our site team and specialist contractors drew on their extensive experience within the London fit-out sector to overcome material handling restrictions and manage noisy works within permitted timeframes. As a result, the project progressed efficiently while minimising disruption to surrounding occupiers.
Creating a Modern Workplace Environment
The CAT B fit-out included new mechanical and electrical services, reconfigured layouts, internal glazed partitions, and bespoke architectural features. In addition, the design introduced a variety of collaborative spaces that support both formal and informal interaction.
Throughout the project, careful coordination between design and construction teams ensured that every element aligned with the client’s vision. Consequently, the completed workspace delivers a modern, flexible environment that supports learning, engagement, and professional development.
The Feature History Wall
A standout element of the scheme is the bespoke feature wall that runs along the main corridor. This distinctive installation combines craftsmanship, technology, and storytelling to create a memorable focal point within the office.
The team constructed the feature using a hardwood framework clad in black American oak veneer. Furthermore, specialist fabricators pre-cut LED lighting channels into the veneer before installing the lighting on site. This approach created a striking illuminated feature that extends throughout the corridor.
To enhance the experience further, we integrated multiple AV screens into the wall. These displays allow BCS to showcase continuous visual content, celebrating the organisation’s history, achievements, and industry influence. As a result, the feature has become known as the “History Wall” and serves as a defining element of the workplace identity.
The Outcome
Through close collaboration between the client, design team, and construction team, we delivered an engaging and highly flexible office fit-out that exceeded expectations. Moreover, the completed workplace demonstrates how thoughtful design and expert delivery can transform a space into a destination that users genuinely enjoy.
The project stands as a successful example of a modern CAT B office fit-out, combining innovative design features, flexible event spaces, and high-quality finishes to create a workplace that supports both collaboration and learning.
