Restoration and re-creation of a historic 19th century clock tower, blending heritage craftsmanship with modern construction expertise to deliver a landmark addition in the heart of Brighton.
The scheme focused on recreating the historic clock tower while respecting the architectural character of the existing building. In addition, our team refurbished internal areas of the college as part of the wider works.
Recreating the Historic Clock Tower
Sir Thomas Graham Jackson originally designed the clock tower during the 19th century. His design sought to complement earlier works undertaken on the college site by Sir George Gilbert Scott.
However, funding difficulties prevented the original central bell tower from reaching completion. The new project therefore provided an opportunity to realise an important element of the historic design.
Bespoke Clock and Heritage Detailing
A key part of the Brighton clock tower restoration involved creating a bespoke clock based on the original 19th-century designs. Careful attention to detail helped ensure the new addition complemented the character and proportions of the historic building.
Furthermore, our approach balanced new construction with the sensitive treatment of the existing architecture. This allowed the completed tower to sit naturally within its historic surroundings.
Restoration Works in an Operational College
Delivering the project in the heart of Brighton presented several logistical challenges. In particular, the college continued its normal activities while our team progressed the construction and restoration works.
Therefore, careful coordination remained essential throughout the programme. Our team planned activities around the operational requirements of the college while maintaining progress on the tower.
Alongside the external works, Virtus also refurbished internal areas of the college. This formed part of the wider programme of improvements to the historic property.
Completing the Brighton Clock Tower Restoration
Ultimately, the project combined heritage restoration, specialist construction and internal refurbishment within an operational environment. The completed clock tower brings an important element of the original architectural vision to life.
For Virtus, the project represents another distinctive addition to our heritage portfolio. It also demonstrates our ability to deliver sensitive construction and restoration works within historically significant buildings.
